Sr. Staff Scientist, CPV Cells

POSITION DESCRIPTION

This individual will have technical leadership of SolFocus's CPV Cell roadmap. Development of the roadmap involves direct interaction with CPV solar cell vendors, ownership of in-house testing and evaluation of CPV solar cells and their impact on overall system performance and energy harvest. This position requires strong engineering fundamentals with emphasis in the following areas: III-V exipatial growth and post growth processes, knowledge in semiconductor packaging design, with emphasis on high-power elecrical interconnect, thermal management, high-volume manufacturing processes and equipment, and packaged component reliability and lifetime modeling.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Technical interaction with CPV cell vendors: maintain projected cell roadmap and own cell specifications
• Perform in-house testing of CPV cells
• Design and qualify packaging for high-power semiconductor solar cells
• Model and report on energy harvest impact of various CPV cells in the context of overall system design

 SKILLS

• Must demonstrate technical leadership. Be able to work as a leader and a member of highly interactive and dynamic team.
• Must be familiar with III-V exipatial growth and post growth processes
• Must demonstrate practical experiences in design for manufacturing, design for testing, design for reliability.
• Must be experienced with product development life cycle and product transfer to volume manufacturing.
• Must be familiar with thermal and electrical packaging techniques.

QUALIFICATIONS (Training & Experience)

• Minimum 15+ years of power electronics device design and/or packaging is a must.
• CPV solar cell knowledge is highly desirable
• Strong knowledge packaging process such as die attach, wire bond, encapsulation, electrical interconnect.
• Knowledge in ceramic substrates, insulating materials, thermal management methods.
• Minimum education requirement: MS in related engineering/science discipline, PhD preferred.
